Ocean Eight keeps things low-key, and the 2023 Pinot Noir follows suit - cool, calm, and beautifully made. Mike Aylward’s estate vineyard down in Shoreham turned out a smaller-than-usual crop in 2023, thanks to a patchy flowering season, but what fruit there was came off the vine with loads of flavour and natural structure.
As always, this is all estate-grown, wild fermented, and matured mostly in older oak - no flashy winemaking, just a focus on letting the site do the talking. It’s bright and red-fruited, with a bit of grip and plenty of energy, built in that lighter, coastal Mornington style that Ocean Eight does so well.
If you're into Pinot that's more about perfume and finesse than power, this is one of those wines that quietly hits the mark, year in, year out.
