"If you were only going to take one Australian winery to the world, Yangarra may well be it."
- Campbell Mattinson (Halliday Wine Companion)
Simply put, Yangarra Estate is one of Australia's finest wine producers. Their organic and biodynamically certified vineyard high up in the sought-after Blewitt Springs subregion of McLaren Vale produces Grenache, Shiraz and Rhone Valley-inspired textural whites that are as good as anything produced here, or abroad.
This limited 'Masterclass' pack brings you four of the newly released Yangarra 'Icon Series' wines, featuring both white and red cuvees. These are all amongst the finest examples of their kind in Australia, and each with phenomenal reviews from Australia's leading wine critics.
Grab this limited pack while you can and experience for yourself why Yangarra is not only one of our favourite producers, but one of Australia's wine treasures.
A decade ago Yangarra had the foresight to import most of the remaining permitted Chateauneuf du Pape grape varieties (there are 13 in total) missing from their Rhone-inspired McLaren Vale vineyard. This Ovitelli Blanc is a blend of Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Grenache Gris, Bourboulenc and Clairette, and wondefully displays the suitability of these varieties to McLaren Vale.
Around 60% of the fruit sees time on skins (for on average 120 days), with the majority fermented in ceramic egg, before finally blended and matured back in egg again. The result is a stunningly textural white wine; flavourful, dry, filled with notes of pears, apples and lemon awash with sea spray.
It's a wine filled with personality and interest, and yet another pioneering cuvee from this innovative winemaking team.
Vintage after vintage, Yangarra has set the McLaren Vale benchmark with their standard estate offering - but it's with small batches like this Roussanne that they really take things up a notch.
Welcome to the 'Roux Beaute'. Made in two 675L ceramic eggs, one fermented on its skins for a mammoth 120 days, this just oozes texture. It's luscious, powerful and complex whilst still maintaining phenomenal balance and freshness.
No one in the country is pushing the boundaries of this variety like Peter Fraser and his team, and with truly stunning results.
A Grenache of remarkable purity and energy here from the team at Yangarra, and simply put one of our favourite Australian wines.
To create the Ovitelli Grenache, a selection of the best fruit from the old Grenache vines that populate the 80-year-old Yangarra vineyard is carefully berry sorted, then sent to ceramic egg to ferment naturally and left to rest on skins for 170 days thereafter.
This is an ethereal Grenache, a nervy and tightly coiled rendition of the variety, which speaks eloquently and beautifully of its home.
It's a truly wonderful example of McLaren Vale Grenache, which is stunning now but will also evolve gracefully with time in bottle.
The King's Wood is one of the premium, small-batch releases in the excellent Yangarra portfolio, and has long been one of McLaren Vale's better Shiraz.
This comes from a small southeast-facing sandy ironstone outcrop on rhe Yangarra vineyard. 15% whole bunches used in the ferment, the fruit hand-picked and carefully double-sorted for quality control before being hand-plunged and left to rest in a huge oak cask before bottling. Oak is well and truly in the background here, a mere player in the overall symphony of this spectacular wine.
It's a lifted, elegant, Northern-Rhone inspired Shiraz, with layers of black and blue fruits, grilled meats and savoury spice. Winemaker Peter Fraser and team highlighting the quality and vibrancy of their fruit as the hero in this wine.
Poised, polished and powerful, it's a beautiful wine and a pristine example of McLaren Vale Shiraz.
